Warning: Don't rely on one or two directories for business

As mentioned in our articles on inbound links and site promotion, having your site listed in the right directories is important for helping customers find you online. Hitwise Australia's e-mail newsletter dated 29th November 2007 provides tips on choosing directories and why you need to be listed in several.

When Google recently updated the way that it ranks web pages, some directories plummeted in the search results. They were, effectively, downgraded by Google. As a result, businesses relying on those directories for inbound links have slipped downwards in Google's search results.

As Hitwise explain, this means you can't afford to be reliant on one or two directories for traffic and you need to choose your directories carefully. The better directories review websites and their accompanying copy for quality and relevance before accepting them for listing.

Are you waiting for Google to bring customers to you?

Why leave the fate of your business in the hands of search engines? Actively help customers find your site without the search engines and optimise your site for better search engine performance. Use the 10-point action plan in our article, How to promote and optimise your business website.

Why you need inbound links and how to get them

A website without good quality, relevant inbound links is like a shop with no street signage; customers will have trouble finding you. Read the complete article to find out which links give the best results and how you can increase the number and quality of your inbound links.

Top 10 Search Engine Optimisation Tips

Have you been wondering how to get your website into the top search results on the Web? You may have heard that you need to 'optimise' your web pages. It means knowing who your customers are and giving them the information they want in a form that the search engines can understand.
